Midtown Elementary proudly carries forward a rich legacy rooted in the history of West Madison Elementary School, a school that served generations of Madison families and helped shape our community for nearly a century.
West Madison Elementary was originally located on Pension Row in Madison, Alabama, beginning in 1920. After the original building was destroyed by fire in 1949, a new campus was constructed on Wall Triana Highway in 1953. Over the decades, the school grew alongside the Madison community—expanding classrooms, adding new grade levels, and adapting to the needs of a rapidly growing city.
Throughout its history, West Madison experienced many transitions, including integration in 1970, multiple campus renovations and expansions, and changing grade configurations as Madison City Schools continued to grow. Generations of students, teachers, and families built a strong tradition of excellence, community, and pride within its halls.
In 2021, Midtown Elementary opened its doors as a new chapter in that story. While Midtown is a modern school built for the future, many of the traditions, relationships, and Wildcats spirit that began at West Madison continue today through our students, staff, and families.
Today, Midtown Elementary serves Kindergarten through 5th grade students in the heart of Madison City Schools. We are proud to blend innovation, creativity, leadership, and community while honoring the legacy that helped build the foundation of our school family.

- Students are welcome to enter our building at 7:10 a.m. each morning.
- Car line begins at 7:10 and ends at 7:35 a.m.
- The start of the school day is 7:40 a.m. Students should be in class, ready to learn at this time.
- The school day ends at 2:40 p.m. each day.
- Our Expanded Day Program is open each school day from 2:40 until 6:00 p.m. Expanded Day will be closed on the dates scheduled as Collaborative Days on the Madison City Schools calendar as well as on scheduled holidays.
